How to Talk on the Phone in Punjabi

How to talk on the phone in Punjabi: hello, who is this, how are you, and I will call you back, with Gurmukhi and pronunciation for calling family.

How to Talk on the Phone in Punjabi

Most Punjabi phone calls open with haan ji? (ਹਾਂ ਜੀ?) or hello?, followed by Sat Sri Akal. You ask who is calling with kaun bol riha hai? (ਕੌਣ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ?), ask how they are with ki haal hai? (ਕੀ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ?), and say you will call later with main baad vich phone karaanga (ਮੈਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ).

My nani does not do video calls. She does the phone, the actual phone, picked up after four rings with a loud "Haan ji?" that means she has no idea who is calling and is fully prepared for it to be anyone. For years I would freeze in that first second, panic, and switch to English, which she half-understands and entirely tolerates. The day I learned to carry a whole phone call in Punjabi, something changed between us. It is a strangely high-leverage skill, because a phone call strips away gestures and faces and forces you to actually speak. Here is the script that got me through.

How do you answer the phone in Punjabi?

EnglishGurmukhiPronunciation
Hello? (on the phone)ਹੈਲੋ? / ਹਾਂ ਜੀ?hello? / haan ji?
Sat Sri Akalਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲsat sri akaal
Who is this?ਕੌਣ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ?kaun bol riha hai?
It's me, ___ਮੈਂ ___ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂmain ___ bol riha haan

That last one literally means "I am ___ speaking". A man says bol riha haan, a woman says bol rahi haan. If you want to add your name and a little more about yourself once they ask, I broke down the whole self-introduction in How to introduce yourself in Punjabi.

The warm-up

No Punjabi phone call gets to the point quickly. There is a ritual exchange first, and skipping it is mildly rude:

  • Ki haal hai? (ਕੀ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ?): "how are you?"
  • Theek haan, tusi sunao (ਠੀਕ ਹਾਂ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸੁਣਾਓ): "I'm fine, you tell me (what's new)."
  • Sab theek hai? (ਸਭ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ?): "is everything okay?"
  • Roti khaadi? (ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਧੀ?): "have you eaten?" Yes, this is a normal phone greeting. It means "I care about you", not "I am taking attendance".

Those little ki / kaun / kithe question words are the hinges of every call. They each get a fuller treatment in Punjabi question words, which is worth a look if the call ever goes off-script.

When the line is bad

Someone is always on a train, or in a basement, or holding the phone upside down. Keep these ready:

EnglishGurmukhiPronunciation
I can't hear youਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਰਹੀmainu aawaaz nahi aa rahi
Speak a little louderਥੋੜਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਬੋਲੋthoda uccha bolo
Hello, are you there?ਹੈਲੋ, ਸੁਣ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?hello, sun rahe ho?
The signal is weakਸਿਗਨਲ ਘੱਟ ਹੈsignal ghatt hai

If the call drops mid-sentence, a quick apology helps, and I list the options in how to say sorry in Punjabi.

How do you say "I'll call you back" in Punjabi?

The ending has its own little dance, and "I'll call you back" is the phrase you will use most:

  • Main baad vich phone karaanga (ਮੈਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ): "I'll call later." (A woman says karaangi.)
  • Main thoṛi der vich call karda haan (ਮੈਂ ਥੋੜੀ ਦੇਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ): "I'll call in a bit."
  • Apna khyaal rakhna (ਆਪਣਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਰੱਖਣਾ): "take care of yourself."
  • Chalo, fer gall karaange (ਚਲੋ, ਫੇਰ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ): "okay, we'll talk again."

And then, because no Punjabi elder hangs up on the first goodbye, you say Sat Sri Akal two or three more times while they tell you to eat properly and not stay up late.

Why the phone is the best practice

I did not expect this: the phone is hard and that is the point. With no face to read, your ear has to do all the work, and your mouth gets nowhere to hide. Which is exactly why I drilled phone calls inside Panjabi Go using native-quality audio, so the rhythm of ki haal hai and the rising haan ji? were in my ear before I ever dialled. The pronunciation feedback meant I could hear when my own bol riha haan was off, with nobody on the other end to politely pretend they understood.

So here is a small dare: next time your nani picks up, do not switch to English in that first second. Hold the line, say Sat Sri Akal, and let the call carry you. She will notice. Mine did.
