Who it's for

Panjabi and Gurmukhi for Sikh Learners

Learn to read Gurmukhi, the script of the Guru Granth Sahib, and speak Panjabi at the gurdwara. What Panjabi Go teaches, how long it takes and what it does not.

If you want to read Gurbani in the original, start with Gurmukhi, the script of the Guru Granth Sahib. Most adults can read it in 4-6 weeks. Panjabi Go teaches the 35 akhar, laga matra and Muharni, with native-quality audio and feedback on your pronunciation. It teaches the script and modern Panjabi. It does not teach the meaning of Gurbani.

I learned Gurmukhi at Sunday school, and the reading got rusty. When I had kids, I worried that they would lose the language, so I built Panjabi Go. For many Sikh families, the gurdwara is where the language matters most, so the app teaches the script from the first letter.

Why start with the script?

Gurmukhi is the script of the Guru Granth Sahib, and Guru Angad is credited with standardising it. I cover this in a short history of Punjabi. When you can read Gurmukhi, you can follow the screen during kirtan, read along with paath and read your gutka without a transliteration.

Transliteration means Gurbani written in English letters. It looks easier, but English letters cannot show every Gurmukhi sound, so the words come out wrong. Gurmukhi is largely phonetic: you read what is written. The order that I recommend is in how to read Gurmukhi, step by step.

What is Muharni?

Muharni is a chart that joins each letter to each vowel sign: ਕ, ਕਾ, ਕਿ, ਕੀ, ਕੁ, ਕੂ and so on. It is often chanted aloud. It trains your eye to read a letter and its vowel sign as one sound. Panjabi Go teaches it after the vowel signs, which I explain in my guide to laga matra.

Why does pronunciation matter?

Gurmukhi has sounds that English does not have. Aspirated consonants such as kh and ph are said with a puff of air, and a missing puff can change the word. I wrote about these in aspirated sounds in Punjabi. Panjabi also uses tone to tell some words apart.

Panjabi Go plays native-quality audio for each letter and word. Then it listens to you and gives feedback on each sound, and the lessons teach the tones. The 3D mouth videos show where your tongue and lips go for each sound.

Can modern Panjabi help you understand Gurbani?

It helps, but it is not enough. Gurbani is written in Gurmukhi, but its language is older than modern Panjabi, and it mixes several languages of north India. Even the spelling follows its own grammar. In ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ (sat naam), the vowel signs at the end of each word are grammar marks, and you do not say them as you would in modern Panjabi.

The meaning of a shabad comes from katha, vichaar, a teacher and a trusted commentary. Panjabi Go gives you the script and the language around it. I wrote more about this in learning Punjabi to understand Gurbani.

Which phrases help at the gurdwara?

The Sikh greeting is Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. You will also hear Sat Sri Akal, langar (the free kitchen) and degh (the sweet karah parshad). The words and the etiquette are in Punjabi phrases for the gurdwara.
