What does Panjabi Go do differently?

Panjabi Go teaches the language as a whole, not as a list of phrases. I grew up in the UK speaking Panjabi quite well, but English became my default at school. I learned Gurmukhi at Sunday school, and the reading got rusty. When I had kids, I worried that they would lose the language, so I built the app that I wanted for my own family.

  • A path from the first letter. You start with the 35 akhar, then the vowel signs. I explain them in my guide to laga matra.
  • Feedback on how you sound. The AI Pronunciation Coach listens and tells you when a sound is off. Aspirated sounds such as kh and bh catch out most learners, and I wrote about them in aspirated sounds in Punjabi.
  • 3D mouth videos show where your tongue and lips go for each sound.
  • Practice that builds a habit. Lessons are short, with spaced repetition, streaks, four games and AI Voice Chat for real conversation.
  • Words for family life. Lessons cover family relations, akhaan (proverbs), the Nanakshahi calendar, and phrases for the gurdwara and weddings.
  • 235 lessons, not only phrases. The lessons sit in 30 units, from the letters to guided dialogues, and a dictionary of more than 35,000 words is there when you need a word. The phrasebook adds 210 everyday phrases, with AI notes on how to use each one.
  • AI that talks with you. AI Voice Chat is a spoken conversation with a character called Jaspal Singh, at three levels. The AI Tutor answers your questions and suggests lessons, and Ladoo, an AI study buddy, plans what you study next.
  • Audiobooks and short stories. A growing library has 8 audiobook summaries of popular books, such as The Power of Now, read in Panjabi, and 10 short stories set in Punjabi villages. The Gurmukhi text follows the audio, and you tap a word to see what it means.
  • A level test. An adaptive test of about 24 questions checks 6 skills and shows your level in under 10 minutes.

When is uTalk the better choice?

  • You want Pakistani Punjabi or the Shahmukhi script. uTalk has a course for it. Panjabi Go teaches Gurmukhi only. I explain the two scripts in Gurmukhi vs Shahmukhi.
  • You need to learn offline. uTalk works without a connection. Panjabi Go needs the internet.
  • You want the lowest yearly price. uTalk costs $59.99 a year. Panjabi Go's cheapest annual plan is $99.90.
  • You want useful phrases fast, for a trip or a family visit, more than grammar.
  • You want many languages. uTalk has starter words in more than 150 languages, and it says that more than 30 million people have used it.

When is Panjabi Go the better choice?

  • You want to read Gurmukhi. Panjabi Go teaches every letter and vowel sign with native-quality audio.
  • You want structure. A FluentU review of uTalk lists "no structured learning or grammar instruction" as a drawback. Panjabi Go takes you from letters to sentences to conversation in order.
  • You want to know if you sound right. The AI Pronunciation Coach checks each sound, and the 3D mouth videos show you how to fix it.
  • You want to have conversations. AI Voice Chat lets you practise speaking, not only repeating.
  • You want stories and audiobooks. You listen to book summaries and short stories in Panjabi, and you read along in Gurmukhi.
  • You want a plan for the whole family. The Family Pack gives four people a Fluent seat each.

How long will it take to speak Punjabi?

Most adults can read Gurmukhi in 4-6 weeks with regular practice. A basic conversation takes six to twelve months. A phrase app helps you say set phrases sooner, but conversation needs grammar and a lot of listening. I explain the numbers in how long it takes to learn Punjabi.

How much do Panjabi Go and uTalk cost?

Panjabi Go has three plans: Read, Speak and Fluent. They cost $9.99, $14.99 and $19.99 a month in the US, or £6.99, £9.99 and £14.99 in the UK. A year costs the same as 10 months, so annual plans start at $99.90. There is also a Lifetime plan at $800 (£600), and a Family Pack with four Fluent seats at $59.97 (£44.97) a month. You can see what each plan includes on the pricing page.

uTalk costs $9.99 a month, $42.99 for six months or $59.99 a year on its US website. It does not offer a free trial, but it gives a 28-day money-back guarantee.

What can't Panjabi Go do?

  • It has no web app. You learn on an iPhone or an Android phone.
  • It has no offline mode, so you need an internet connection.
  • One device can be signed in to an account at a time.
  • It is for ages 13 and up.
  • It teaches standard Panjabi in Gurmukhi, not Shahmukhi.

Most language apps don't teach Panjabi. We do, and uTalk teaches a lot of useful words. If you want the whole language, start the free trial and see if the lessons suit you.
